Custom clack fans: how to get them right for your event

Three open clack fans over the Make Chaos scribble

If you've been to a Pride, a drag show or a dance floor lately, you've probably heard one before you saw it. A clack fan snaps open with a noise that cuts through a room, which is exactly why people want their own design on one.

What is a clack fan?

It's a large folding fan with bamboo ribs. Ours are 33 cm closed and open to about 62 cm. A sharp flick of the wrist makes the clack.

Who orders custom fans?

Almost anyone who wants to be noticed:

  • Prides and festivals, as merch or for the team.
  • Club nights and drag shows.
  • Weddings, hen dos and stag dos.
  • Brands launching a product or looking for a giveaway that doesn't go in the bin.
  • Charities raising money at events.

Design tips

A fan is a big half circle, and the middle of it disappears when it's folded. Keep these in mind:

  • Put the main message high up on the arc, where the fan is widest.
  • Go bold. Big shapes and short words read from across a room.
  • Check it against the fan's dark or light background.
  • Send the best quality artwork you have.

Leave enough time

Don't leave it to the week before. As a guide, we make up to 15 custom fans in about 3 to 5 days, 15 to 25 in about 7 days, and allow around 4 weeks for orders above 25, plus delivery. If you've got a fixed event date, tell us at the start.

How to order

You can order from a single fan up to 500 and beyond, and nothing is printed until you've approved a proof. Until Clack Fans opens its own shop, you'll find custom fans at Pinkswag.
